Found an old friend from 3 years ago
About 3 years ago, at my last apartment, I met this sad, filthy old tomcat who was sleeping in our building’s semi-outdoor stairwell. He was skinny and a little standoffish. I coaxed him down from his spot with some cat food, and he started to warm up to me.

Eventually, I started feeding him every other day. He started hanging out in front of the stores near my building, and would trot up the stairs after me for rubs and food. He would even try to come into my apartment and meow at the door (we had just gotten a second cat off the streets and we really couldn’t handle another at the time). His meow was very distinctive, a deep, short, chirp.
-
I worried about him, but the neighborhood shops seemed to like him and began feeding him too. He got a little fatter and looking in a little better shape. But after a few months, I stopped seeing him around my building as often. He would come by maybe a few times a week, and then not at all. The last time I saw him he was in a courtyard area where another neighborhood stray lived. I wished him well, and had a feeling that I would never see him again.

I moved two years ago, about a kilometer north. But I often find myself in my old neighborhood to go to the post office or visit the dogs I know near there. A few days ago I was walking out of a stationary store when I saw a scruffy old tomcat laying in front of a little dairy stand. When I approached, I heard a familiar, deep, chirpy meow.
-
I couldn’t believe it! It was him! I had to check my old photos from 2023 to confirm (same color patterns on his chest and front feet), but here was my favorite little tomcat who I used to feed every day all those years ago. A little worse for the wear, but still very loved by the locals. The lady who ran the dairy stand had left some food out for him, and I think she was trying to tell us (I’m American living in a foreign country, so there’s a bit of a language barrier) that he lives in an apartment complex nearby.

With how many strays that I’ve lost over the years, it was nice seeing Tommy again, knowing that he’s still ok. And that he still remembers me.
First photo is most recent. Second two are from 2023. You really cannot tell from those photos, but I have some bigger video files where it’s much clearer that he’s the same boi.

Awwwww, love it! 😻

This reunion is just adorable. People sometimes wonder whether cats remember the humans who were kind to them, and stories like this make it hard to doubt it. Out of all the places and all the people he could have encountered over the years, that familiar chirpy meow seemed to say he remembered exactly who this person was. Cats may like to act independent, but they clearly don't forget the humans who cared for them when it mattered most.

Yay! Happy for both of you! I hope he finds a permanent, loving home soon! 😻❤️🙏

It is always reassuring to know that a community cat has people looking out for him. He may not have a single official owner, but it sounds like he has plenty of humans making sure he is fed, cared for, and never too far from a comfortable place to rest. That kind of support can make all the difference for an older tomcat. Seeing that he is still around, still recognized, and still loved by the neighborhood is about as heartwarming as it gets.

Best news I heard all day! So glad!

There is nothing quite like a wholesome cat story to brighten your day. The internet can be full of chaos, but every now and then you come across a story like this and it feels like a little reminder that good things still happen. A beloved stray turns out to be safe, cared for, and still making friends wherever he goes. Add in a surprise reunion years later, and you've got the kind of story that can put a smile on any cat lover's face.
